I always read in my bedroom, sitting cross legged on my bed.  It's also my favorite place and way to write.

I had no idea that this question would be posed since I mentioned it above, but I write in my bedroom, sitting on my bed, legs crossed.  My cats are usually sitting on the bed near me, often trying to get my attention away from what I want to do and onto them, as cats are wont to do.  I always have music playing in the background, and no matter if it's day or night, I have as many lights on as possible.

What book do you really not want to admit to loving?

I don't think I have a book I hate to admit to.  I read mostly adult romance and erotica, along with some really boring history books and an occasional cookbook, but I freely admit to all of them.  Now do I show others the covers of many of my romance and erotica books?  Well, now that's a different story. ;)

Author Cardinal Rules

Oh my.  The recent meltdown of an author on a book reviewer's blog to the tune of 300+ comments between her, him, and other commenters shows how important one of the cardinal rules of being an author is:  Don't EVER fight with a reviewer.  NEVER. EVER.

The details of the recent author behaving badly episode are the same as always.  Reviewer agreed to review a book and didn't give the review the author was looking for because of a misunderstanding.  Whatever the reason for the less than stellar review, the author forgot one of the most important facts of writing/publishing, and especially self-publishing: You can't please everyone all the time.  Hell, you can't please everyone at any time. 

Writers take a chance every time they hand over their work, whether it be to a potential agent or publisher, or later when it's published, reviewers.  Will they see what you saw when you wrote the book?  Will they like it?  And if it's high concept, will they understand where you intended to go with the story?

I know book reviewers who have no qualms about criticizing a book.  I know one very well, in fact.  And I trust her when she carves into a book like it's a week old cantaloupe because I know her skill as an editor and reader.  I've read every review she's written and know that when she points out problems, it's with the intention of being true to what she believes a well written book is supposed to be.  However, she will admit, these are her opinions, that's all.  Nothing more.  But the reality is that I don't know all reviewers out there, and I have to trust that they will read my book with an open mind and with the aim to enjoy it, like my friend does. 

So when I get a response that angers me as much as our recent author behaving badly did, I know that the only course of action is to say, "Thank you for reading my book.  I'm sorry it wasn't for you."  That's all, and that's only if I really want to be gracious.  If I think the review is pure crap, then I say nothing and gather up friends for a drinking/bitchfest about it.  And once we've verbally eviscerated the poor soul over some beers, my friends will then say, "Whatevs.  We love you, regardless of what that jackass wrote."  And then we'll move on to checking out some guy across the bar who we suddenly all realize is incredibly hot (or the beer has made us think so). 

If only our recent example of an author behaving badly had turned to her friends instead of the instant gratification of the comment box below a single blog post.  If only...

Wishing Life Away

I've recently been thinking a lot more about how much I wish my workweek away since the death of one of my colleagues.  Only 60, she died of cancer last week.  I hadn't seen her in months and in fact, didn't know she had left work because of illness.  But the news hit me like a ton of bricks.  I'd known her since undergraduate school and then we attended the same grad school together.  She had returned to school at the age of 40, determined to get her degrees. She did and then proceeded to teach at the same school I did for a long time.

I don't know if hers was a life well lived, but I think it was.  I'm 43 now, and I can appreciate her returning to school at 40.  I've recently begun this journey as a writer, and while I'm pretty new to it as a published (or soon to be published) author, it's opened up a lot of areas to me just as her returning to college must have done for her.  There's the writing, which is the most enjoyable part; the submissions, which I can't lie haven't been bad since I only submitted one book to one publisher and they offered me a contract; the planning for marketing for when the book comes out, which I think could literally take over my day if I let it; and many other things, such as this blog and my website, that are involved in the journey. 

So often, I wish my Mondays through Fridays away because they're the days I do my "day job." When I was a child and I used to say I wish summer would come because it's always been my favorite time of year, my mother would caution me not to wish my life away.  I've been thinking of that for the past week since Sandi died, and I think I must make a concerted effort not to wish each day away because I get to enjoy my weekends writing.  Hopefully in doing so, I increase the possibility that my life is a life well lived.

Waiting...

I continue to wait for the email from the publisher that tells me what edits I must do for Stolen Destiny to become ready for June.  Although I know it's foolish to be worried about something that hasn't happened yet, I am.  I think it's part stubborn belief in a style of writing that I think is interesting and part ego. 

You see, I write my stories from multiple points of view.  In Stolen Destiny, the reader is given the point of view of Varek, Callia, Amon, and the murderer, Derrick James.  Granted Derrick's point of view is quite limited and only in a few places, but it adds interest and shows what Varek must conquer before he can finish his job for the Council and get the girl. As for the three main characters, they spend a great deal of time together and their points of view are important to the story.  Without them, the love triangle doesn't work at the depth I need it to.

Today, editors sometimes think this is head hopping.  I have no idea where this came from, but I can't imagine telling my stories, which are at their core about the love and romance between two people (and the love triangle that forms when Amon becomes involved), from just one point of view. How dreadfully boring it would be to have page after page of just Callia's point of view!  I think that works for short stories and novellas, but at least for me, it doesn't work for novel length stories. 

The other part is pure ego, though.  I like things like adverbs, and I have a feeling many of them might be headed for the chopping block.  And adjectives?  Let's say from what I hear, adjectives are viewed like time spent with Charlie Sheen: a little goes a long way.  But I don't tend to be an adjective girl as much as adverb.  In fact, I don't tend to describe things visually as much as I think I might have to.  My stories tend to revolve around not so much the physical setting as the psychological and emotional developments in the characters.  But I admit, I am less stubborn about these issues.  In fact, it might be nice to go back and describe Amon's Tuscan villa again with more detail. 

I look forward to this time next month when edits will be finished (hopefully) and then I can wait for the book cover art.  But it's all part of the process, so just hang on and I'll be sure to tell you all about it.  :)

I have always had some kind of creative streak going, but one day, I just had something to say.  From that point, it was just a matter of writing fast enough to get the ideas in my head down.  I can't imagine not doing it after it's become such a part of me.

1.  I can't read horror.  I'm just a silly chicken about scary stuff.
2.  But I probably read more erotica than I should, which balances out the horror thing.
3.  Only a small number of people in my life know what kind of books I write.
4.  I'm eagerly awaiting Lover Unleashed to get to the aforementioned Borders on Tuesday and have saved a gift card I received for Christmas to use to buy it.
5.  I can read faster than just about anyone I know or ever met.

Finished and Begun

So I finally finished typing Destiny Renewed, and my fingers hate me right now.  The final draft came in at 84,076 words in slightly under 300 pages.  I sent it to my peeps who will read it, and then it will take its trip in the submissions email to Siren-BookStrand in the hopes that they like the second one in addition to the first one in the series. 

I also began the novella I mentioned in yesterday's post and completed the first chapter.  It has no title, so far, but things flowed well yesterday for about seven pages.

I'm looking forward to a few days of rest and relaxation--not too many, but a few.  I've been checking out a few shows I haven't see before , so I think a few episodes of them should work just fine.

I've also begun planning for virtual book tours, interviews, and guest blogging spots with other authors and at places like The Romance Studio for Stolen Destiny's release in June.  In case anyone wasn't sure, it's the writing that's easy.  The promotion afterward is the work. 

Once I relax for a day or so, it'll be the weekend and I'll be hopping around and enjoying a few days off from work.

Late Night Ideas

For the past couple of nights, I've been unable to get to sleep because ideas for a story keep running through my head.  I write in my bedroom, so it's not surprising that ideas for a new story would crop up in my mind there, but it makes getting a good night's sleep difficult. 

At first, it was just a woman running from someone...well, let's be honest here.  I write romance, so it would most likely be a man she's trying to evade. Over and over that scene played out the other night, and I mentally filed it away right before I finally fell asleep.

Then the next night the story began to flesh itself out. I guess I could say I fleshed it out, but my mind was simply tumbling over ideas and I felt like I was along for the ride.  The hero of the story showed up, dark and mysterious, and he took up that brief bout of insomnia.

Then last night the story took off, so to speak, and I had to write down the ideas this morning when I woke up so I wouldn't forget them.  I have about a page of ideas so far, and I'm thinking novella.  I'm also thinking....and I admit I'm surprised myself that I'm thinking of going in this direction.....vampire.  I'll have to see what happens when I sit down to write, but so far that's where the idea stands. 

I do think this novella will be more erotic than my novels in the Destined Ones series, though.  It just seems to be moving in that direction each night.  More to come when I begin the story.

Updates and Other Stuff

I've written a newsletter for the past two Sundays, but I've decided to limit those to twice a month since I'm thinking once a week might be a bit much. If I'm wrong, definitely tell me. I can certainly do them every Sunday.

According to the magic counting thingy in the left sidebar, I am almost 80% finished with typing Destiny Renewed. This is the second time I promised myself to keep up with the typing instead of leaving it until I finished the book.  One should really learn from mistakes.  Well, I'm pledging that for the third book, which I'm toying with changing from Broken Destiny to some other title, I will keep current with the typing each week instead of procrastinating until the book is finished.  There. Now it's out in the universe. 

I'm also considering making this blog an adult blog, as in having the Content Warning page before people enter.  I personally don't think anyone should have to do that and I don't think my blog is incredibly racy, but the excerpts I put up can be considered adult material.  I just hate more clicking required to get to things. 

Other than those scintillating events, I'm reaching out to other authors of a variety of genres to swap blogs for a day or more in the hopes of reaching more people and helping my fellow writers with the same.  I have a few planned for June and August, and I hope to have more in the coming days, so if you know of anyone who is published or soon to be published (indie or otherwise), have them drop me an email.  I'd love to get together and see what we can do!

The Weekend Creation Blog Hop

My lovely friend Shah over at WordsInSync runs a blog hop each Friday for creative types called The Weekend Creation Blog Hop.  Writers, artists, even book bloggers join up, and it's a great way to see other people's creativity. 

As for me, this week I began down the road of typing/editing my second book with the hopes that I can have it to my beta readers by April 1.  I'm about halfway through now, so I feel pretty good about it.  I'm hoping by this time next week that it will be completed and I can pdf the manuscript for them. 

As I type, I get to enjoy the story all over again, in addition to editing and adding to the story.  I've been pretty happy with most of it.  I must admit, though, some parts I read and say to myself, "Uh, no. That needs to be out," or "Hmmm...I like that, but why did I put it here?"

I hope to get a lot of work done on it in the next two days. Here's to a wonderful weekend!

I don't know if it was last month, but a favorite book I've read recently was Seven Day Loan.  I really liked that book, especially the wild twist it offered.  A little naughty, but oh so nice.

I'm a several-going-at-once girl.  I can't help it. When I find books I like, I find it hard to wait to read them.  But I usually limit the number to 3 or 4.  Any more than that and my head begins to spin.

Just Keep Swimming....

A little update:  I continue to type Destiny Renewed and am at about the halfway point.  I swear I hate typing more than liver, and I really hate liver.  Each night I can, I'm getting between 4000 and 6000 words typed, but it's a bear of a job.  But as my son says about my handwriting it first and then typing, "This is how you roll, Mom." 

I posted on Facebook yesterday that I keep saying to myself like the fish with the short term memory loss in Finding Nemo, "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming..." to encourage myself to keep typing.  "Just keep typing, just keep typing..."

I've been doing some reading too, but work has crashed into that, as usual. Have you ever noticed how the day job seems to get in the way?  I've got to get me a sugar daddy so I can spend my time writing and reading to my heart's content! (I'm only partially kidding about that.  I would do those things if I didn't have to work.  And gardening in the spring and summer. But the sugar daddy would have to be sexy, so the whole plan is highly unlikely, sad to say.)

The weather in Pennsylvania is finally beginning to come around, and tomorrow is looking like a gem--a high of 65 and sunny.  I think I'm feeling some kind of sickness come on that will preclude me from being able to go to work.  Yes, I definitely feel something.  :)

An Author I Enjoyed

As promised, since I've finished writing my second book, I'm taking a little break and doing some reading.  I wanted to mention an author I found while visiting Amazon.  Lyla Sinclair is the author of His Rules, a series of three self-published books entitled Taken By Surprise, Taken Wet, and Taken Completely.  These three novellas revolve around Lauren and Richard, and the erotic romance that develops between them.  And the first book, Taken By Surprise, is #1 on Amazon's Erotica list, and all three are in the top 20. Congratulations to her!

Each of the three stories are quite short, but I found them very enjoyable.  They involve a little BDSM (nothing too much though), and what I read was enough to whet my appetite to read more of Sinclair's work.  She also writes for Ellora's Cave, so I'm sure my future reading will involve a trip to check out those books as Ellora's is famous for very good erotica. 

Finished

I finished writing Destiny Renewed earlier today and have to admit it was with mixed emotions that I ended the story.  When I introduced the character of Amon into Stolen Destiny, he was the bad guy.  But I loved his character so much, I wanted to take him further than I had in the first book, so despite planning to wait to write his as the third or fourth book, his story came out in the early ideas for Destiny Renewed and I ran with it.  Months later, the bad guy has gotten his story and since it's a romance, he's gotten his happily ever after.

The heroine I gave Amon is Thea, who is the closest I've ever gotten to writing a female virgin.  She wasn't a sexual virgin, but she hadn't anywhere as much experience, sexually or otherwise, as her hero.  However, they fit together well, allowed him to be more Alpha than he might have been with a more experienced partner, and I enjoyed writing her as much as him.

Also back in this second book is Amon's servant, Gethen, a dark Sidhe who gets a much fuller role in Destiny Renewed.  Writing Gethen's part in this book was far more emotionally draining than any other character I've ever written before as he doesn't make it through the book. 

I've enjoyed my time with these characters, just as I enjoyed my time with the hero and heroine from the first book, Varek and Callia.  I'll be spending more time with Destiny Renewed's  characters as I type the story, editing and adding along the way, but until then, it's time to take a little break and relax for a few days.

It's almost the weekend again, and it's been a wonderful week off for me.  I received my contract from the publisher, and today they put up my bio and interview on their website.  In addition, I've been on Spring Break from work, so I've gotten a lot of writing done.  In fact, I should be finished with the second book in my Destined Ones Series, Destiny Renewed, this weekend.

It's a lot (she says somewhat sheepishly).  Ever since I got my Kindle, it's just too easy to find one, click purchase, and have it in my hands minutes later.  But let's say it's at least 4 a month.  But if you remember my answer from last week, I don't get that many read when I'm writing.  However, I'll be taking a small break from writing before I move on to the next book, so TBR pile (paperback and ebook), here I come!

Aeveren

Someone asked me where I got the name Aeveren for my Destined Ones books.  The truth is I made it up.  I couldn't find a name to describe exactly what I wanted--to reflect that these people lived many lives through reincarnation--so I decided that I needed to make a new word that would work. 

I still have the envelope I used to experiment with ideas as I rode on my way to my son's Boy Scout camp.  All over it are written words that I tried, including Aevere and Aevera, in addition to Evere.  I didn't like any of those, so I continued to scribble as my friend drove and eventually, in the little space that was left at the bottom, came Aeveren. 

The name reflects both the reincarnation theme of the characters' lives and the idea of the destined one, one person fate has chosen for another.  It's been suggested that I trademark the name, but so far, I haven't done anything about that.  I'm not sure it's necessary.  How's it look?  Aeveren™

Maybe someday.  Right now, I'm more about writing romance and love scenes than claiming a name.  :)

Got My Contract!

Since I'm a newbie author in the publishing sense, I hope everyone will forgive me for posting about getting my contract from Siren-BookStrand today.  I'm over-the-moon thrilled!  The projected publication date for Stolen Destiny remains June 2011, but having the contract in my hand was a definite thrill today.  And then I visited the publisher's site and saw my name on their author roll, which was even more thrilling. 

All this excitement has made writing almost impossible tonight, unfortunately.  I can't keep my focus at all, so I think I'm just going to relax and have a drink.

Reading and Writing

The question with the 18 & Over Tag Along last Friday involved how many books each participant read each month.  I answered that it could be as many as 12, but when I'm writing, the number shrinks to as little as 3.  But I think it's important to continue to read as much as possible in one's genre, even while writing.  I can become too wrapped up in the world I'm creating, and when that happens, I turn to one of my favorite writers to refresh me. 

This weekend I turned to Charlotte Featherstone.  I just love her books.  Her writing is like silk that just drapes over the reader.  I didn't read too much, but just reading a few chapters of any of her books often refocuses me.  It takes me out of my world for even a few minutes, and when I return, I feel rejuvenated. 

I also read my book last night--the one I'm currently writing, Destiny Renewed.  At some point in everything I write, I have to sit back and read it from the beginning.  I imagine some writers do it far earlier than with just four chapters to go, but that's how I like to do it.  So last night, I sat down and read it from beginning to end. 

While there were some parts I re-edited as I read, overall, I was happy to read those earlier chapters again.  And at a few parts, I turned to my son, who had come upstairs to see how I was doing, and said, "I really like this part."  As he usually does, he smiled and said, "That's good, mom.  But shouldn't you like the whole book?"

I love the whole book, but there are parts where the interplay between the characters is just exactly how I wanted it to be.  The tenor of their words is how I intended and the description shows perfectly what I wanted the reader to see. 

So with a week off from work, I plan to stay home and finish Destiny Renewed.  Then when it's complete, I'll begin typing it and re-editing as I go along then too.  The goal is to have it submitted by late spring/early summer, so I feel very good about my progress.

Destiny Renewed Update

Another Saturday of writing, but this time I had to do a little research since I decided to provide a flashback to one of my hero's earlier lifetimes.  I have a lot to choose from since Amon's in his 47th lifetime, but I didn't want to go with anything common.  I've already showcased him either in the first book, Stolen Destiny, or his story, Destiny Renewed, in the late Roman Empire and late 18th century England, and made references to his lifetimes as a Viking warrior, Aztec leader, and Greek in the first century B.C.  But this time I chose to give him a lifetime in 16th century Ottoman Empire Turkey. 

The flashback is just a love scene actually, but I decided to put him in the town of Edirne in western Turkey right around the time of the reign of Suleiman the Great (mid 1500s).  So that meant some research into the time period, the area, and the basic goings on around Turkey in those years. 

I knew the time I chose meant the area was still part of the Ottoman Empire, but I had to make sure I had my ideas in order before I went ahead and wrote anything.  I find this type of research for stories to be a bunch of fun.  I've had an interest in this part of the world for a while, and as much as I'd like to write an entire story based on that area, particularly during Ottoman times, for now I'll settle for a flashback with some steamy sex.

18 and over book blogger tag along is for a specific group of book bloggers. You have to primary review adult books. Yes, I know some of you still read teen and adult, so if you do both your welcome to join in. You can read any genre paranormal, suspense, historical, contemporary or mystery and of course, erotica books. And if your blog has a few extra hot male pictures, well, that’s an added bonus! LOL. This week's question:  How many books do you read in a month?

That's a tough one.  Sometimes I read up to 12 a month, but when I'm writing and things are really flowing, my reading decreases to 3 or 4 a month.  But I read quite quickly, so I can get a book done in a day or so, a novella in a matter of an hour or two.  Recently, between work and writing, my reading has fallen off, but that's sure to change when I finish my second book and begin editing it.

My New Website

Encouraged by my friends, who think I'm far too old fashioned for my own good, I created a website tonight.  Gabrielle Bisset Romance is its name, and it can be found at http://gabriellebisset.weebly.com/

It's all pretty new and I haven't taken many of the wrappings off yet, but I have information on my background, my writing projects, and a contact form for people to leave me comments or ask me questions.  So click on over to Gabrielle Bisset Romance and take a look. I'll be spiffing the place up when I get more to put there and will change the domain name in a little bit, but for now, it's my new official website.  Of course, I plan to keep my blog here on blogger, but I hope you stop by the website and say hi.
